The Old Woman With No Cat

The Old Woman’s Waffle Iron Predicts the Future

The waffle iron arrives
thrift-shop-worn and hissing.

Its hinges creak like gypsy’s bones,
its non-stick grids etched with symbols
that might be Nordic runes.

The old woman pours batter,
and the first prophecy bubbles up:
“BEWARE THE 3RD TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK.”
She flips it, and squints:
“Also, your cat is definitely plotting something.”

The cat licks its paw, unimpressed:
“I told you Tuesdays were sketchy.
Now where’s the syrup?”

The crow drops
a stolen lottery stub into the batter.
“Next week’s numbers are…”
The waffle iron burps, and spells out:
“7, 15, 23, NOPE, 42.”

The cat rezones the kitchen
as a betting shop.

“A small price for clairvoyance,” she nods,
circling tomorrow’s cricket scores.

  1. You know that now you must play those numbers ( 31 included), don’t you?
And when you win, if the crow doesn’t want its share, I will be happy to lighten the bird(en) 😆

    1. Bird(en) (grinning) Very good. Perhaps for once, I’ll buy a Lotto ticket (again). Many years ago, I won £500, and swore off buying another one because I figured that I’d used up my odds. (fingers crossed)

  3. Diggin’ the music while ignoring the blood flow in the final moments. Time to fire up the waffle iron and cook up some sourdough buttermilk waffles! Share with the neighborhood attempted murder of crows?

    1. I haven’t had a waffle since my grandson threw a frozen one into a toaster and declared he only wanted to eat waffles for the rest of his life. He was still very young.

        1. Have you frozen any of your fed starter yet as a backup?
