The Heist — Episode 6: Another Door in the Wall

The gargoyle on the right is still quibbling with the Soup Gobbler on his smartphone — “no, not that wall, the other wall” — when the signal breaks into static and dies exactly as we step through the place where the adjoining property once began.

For a moment nobody moves; the air releases around us with the faintest sigh, carrying the dry bitterness of herbs, roots and old remedies from a room that shows no sign of having held any of them — ever.

Aurelia finds a box of candles on a shelf, and Chris strikes a match — the flame lifts, falters, then steadies, throwing our shadows high against walls that seem to have been waiting a very long time to remember people.

A mouse skitters beneath a cabinet, its tiny feet tapping hollow under the floorboards, as one of the gargoyles raises the candle towards the far wall and says, almost reverently, “There…”

And when the book is finally laid before me, everything noisy falls away; in Montpellier I had stood on the other side of glass, allowed to see but not touch, and now five hundred years of survival are within reach.

I touch the spine first, hardly more than the weight of my fingertips, and understand that every hand before mine has hidden it, carried it, studied it, sold it, preserved it …while others tried to decide who was permitted to know what its pages contained.

The Heist — The Finale: Carrying It Forward

By morning the candles have burnt low, Chris and Aurelia speak in voices made smaller, and even the gargoyles have stopped scrolling on their smartphones long enough to watch the book resting between us — the still point around which the room has rearranged itself.

All this time I thought I wanted possession of the moment, the impossible hour of holding it, but possession sounds hollow now, a vulgar little word; knowledge survives by custody, by those willing to keep it safe until the next trustworthy hands arrive.

I think of those who tried to destroy what it carried and those who refused to let it disappear, and understand that knowledge does not survive because history is kind but because, again and again, someone decides it must be carried forward.

What remains is the harder question: who protects knowledge, who suppresses it, who preserves it, who reaches for it, and whose hands can be trusted.

I wrap the Herbier carefully, lower it into a packing box, fill the empty spaces until nothing can shift, then seal it securely and take up a thick black marker.

Across the lid, in bold letters, I write:
