The Heist: episode 2

“Here, let me.” Aurelia, the nervous poet, unfolds the oldest of the building plan, its paper brittle weak at the creases, enlarged until the lines blur into something between architecture and confession, then taps one narrow rectangle behind the rear rooms.

“That isn’t on the later drawings,” she says.

Nick leans over her shoulder, studies it for a moment, and answers with a low, thoughtful hum grunt that means he has already understood something the rest of us have not.

Chris grins slowly (always a reassuring development), and pulls her big bag closer, while one gargoyle, its small stone teeth snapping softly, climbs onto the plans and plants both stone feet precisely where the vanished passageway used to be.

I am less interested in whether that passage once led somewhere useful than in the fact that the building has forgotten a piece of itself.

Suddenly New York no longer feels like the next destination; it feels like the answer to a question the plans have just asked.

    1. (laughing)
Grunt is to project. Hum is internal. I think hum says more about the Gatekeeper’s character.
