Episode 9 Dead Men Don’t Drown
Clive receives me in the basement office beneath his terraced house, one hand resting on the walking stick beside his chair and the other holding a book against his chest as though it has weight enough to steady him.
There are no windows, only shelves, a green-shaded lamp, a two-sided oak desk built for clerks who distrust comfort, and the deep, dry smell of old paper lying in layers like weather.
His wife brings tea and ginger snaps on a tray, smiles once, and leaves so quietly that the closing door feels less like an exit than a seal.
“You asked about probate,” Clive says, dipping his fountain pen into a glass jar of ink, “but probate is only where the thread begins.”
He opens a buff folder tied with faded tape and lays out the court order declaring Jacob Macleod dead, the life-insurance correspondence, and a trawler policy stamped PAID in red so bright it seems still wet.
Then, without looking at me, he places one finger beneath the settlement date and says, “Fast work, for a widow who had not yet buried her husband.”
