The Old Woman With No Cat

cartoon drawing of cat in a sunbeam sitting on the kitchen table looking at a sandwich

The Cat’s Afternoon Philosophy

The cat watches the Old Woman layer pickle on ham then cheese on a slice of bread,

“Think of a sunbeam as a door,” begins the cat,

“Step into it.
You are gold.
Warm.
You are exactly where you should be.

Then it moves.
The door closes.
You are you again,

slightly chilled,
slightly wronged.

This is not cruelty.
This is training.

The universe calls.
Notice it’s arrived.
Appreciate it.

Follow it across the rug
with devotion,
and dignity.”

The cat walks across the kitchen table and studies the sandwich,

“Because,” it continues, “a sunbeam is not gifted.
It is earned.
By our being there.
By being a creature
who knows
that warmth is fleeting.”

The cat stretches,
sniffs at the ham,
and licks a paw,

“Also, he adds, “if a human is sitting in it,
they are in your way.

That’s not philosophy.
That’s fact.”

    1. The cat is slowly growing on Crymych; like
      moss, but funnier. 😂

  3. Ahh, cats and sunbeams and the sandwich and the fact that human is always in the way.

I imagine a cat would absolutely think that way.

      1. this is the little fact I always forget about you… Even though the name of the series says it all.

well, I too don’t have a cat in my rental but I have the cats of my mum, my mum in law and the woman I call mum in the apartment I stay in during school…

lots if mums and cats! So I am lucky.

    1. Ah yes. That ‘all I survey is mine’ stretch. Very felinalistic. That’s not a word — yet.

  5. Sunbeams are from a door that opened somewhere in the universe that has taken years to warm our souls.
I hope the cat enjoyed the song as much as I
