2208: Everywhere Poems

An Everywhere Poem

Tuesday:
wind rushed the sparks.

a snap,
and combustion
of sun-baked grass.

it’s the scent of charred
dried herbs.
smoke bitting
bright, and mineral dry.

it’s to swallow up
a dusty road —
it’s a ghost cough
lingering in the throat.

sirens
pluck at the air
in two-tones.

Friday:
the fire has gone
before I find it.

only its mouth
remains —

black grass,
the bitter green
of something
burned too quickly.

smoke has teeth.

it catches
behind my nose,
leaves grit
at the back of my throat.

somewhere beyond the trees

sirens trade
two notes
back and forth.

then wind —

lifting the last
of what burned

into the air
I breathe.

Everywhere Poems don’t have a subject. They have a starting point and follow wherever attention leads. It’s — go for a walk and see where you end up.

  2. Indeed. Wildfires are still raging in many places around Europe. It’s El Niño effect, isn’t it, and sadly.

    1. Yes and no, Chris. El Niño can influence weather worldwide, but it doesn’t simply cause drought and wildfires. Its effects vary by region and can bring either wetter or drier conditions, while Europe’s current fires are the result of exceptional heat and dryness interacting with weather factors. In the UK, Copernicus is warning of a very wet autumn and early winter, which could cause severe flooding.

But there’s no doubt that this severe El Niño phenomenon is not helping us.

  3. Too many world-wide places being ravaged by wildfires. And then come the mudslides as Nature tries desperately for new growth under monsoons where they shouldn’t be.
