0207: Everywhere Poems

B&W dandelion seeds

An Everywhere Poem: Over The Mole

sun rises.
tops the trees.
crow on a branch.

squirrel runs
the fence length,
cheeks full
of autumn.

rose buds yesterday.
opened today.

hard to know
if that’s pink
or peach.

I heard
there’s a boy,

ten, — perhaps

hanging
over the stream.

school children
found him —

from the footbridge
over the stream
that disappears
underground
not far from here.

the one
we locals call
the River Styx.

Everywhere Poems don’t have a subject. They have a starting point and follow wherever attention leads. It’s — go for a walk and see where you end up.

    1. Such a sad turn. How death sometimes finds us on a beautiful day.

  3. Great path to get to the bridge .., of course in the literary sense… distracted by the view when one comes to the sight at the bridge one pauses… still pausing… trying to take it in .. deep breaths … empties out one’s heart … haunting … poetic … forgot about the other uses of ‘crossing’ the bridge…

    1. Thank you, ms pie. Permit to think out loud for second (smiling) because you’ve raised a very interesting and valid point.

You see, I didn’t want this poem to be about grief — it doesn’t ask the morning to carry the tragedy. It allows the tragedy to enter the morning. The morning remains itself. The crow is still on its branch. The squirrel still has its cheeks full of autumn. The rose still can’t decide whether it’s pink or peach.

And the poem refuses to rearrange the world to suit the news, and that’s the way it actually happens.

It struck me that poems about tragedy become all about tragedy, but I remember when a person that I loved died, the morning gave no hint of what was coming, and the day continued around the event as if nothing had happened. And I thought … how can I put that into perspective.

I really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

      1. Funny dat… at first I was like … oh dear did I step into something yet again??!!… of course my immediate reaction… then when I saw smiling …I totally let my breath go thinking to myself be brave girl be brave … I was as literally walking the path .. your description was so that I could see myself walking seeing the sun rise through the trees… the crow… the squirrels .., the rose… these are all the things I see in my everyday life… familiarity… and the thought of the boy was ever so gentle and subtle … as if it sorta just unfolded … ever so gentle w/o making waves .. I can truly appreciate the beauty of a great writer … ya know like Steinbeck… may I suggest that to you … I hope so … thanks for letting me know your thoughts … it also gives me a better understanding of you:yourself and how I reacted to your story.. again I look forward to reading more of your stories… your stories also make me a better writer seeing the depths and layers of another writer … geesh that was sorta sweet Misky … I’ll get back to gardening and sweating now… as always may your bread be buttered with unsalted butter and sweet jam
