0207: Brigid’s Diary – A Six

The Epilogue: A Return to Thyme

Brigid and Felreil left Room 215 as they had entered it, by the hidden closet, with the good sense not to ask whether one century had finished or merely misplaced them in someone else’s plan.

The bellhop-automaton raised a final card, though neither of them paused to read it; Felreil was already holding the door for Brigid with his usual quiet patience.

As they crossed the threshold and left, the room emptied of voices, leaving behind cake, time and clocks, and the ordinary traffic of air too thin to be trusted entirely — Brigid felt only the small, clean ache of missing Provence.

And so they arrived, not into another plot but into long shadows under olive trees, the familiar road lifting toward home, and the air smelling faintly of thyme and salt warmed through by heat.

“There now,” Brigid said, as if returning from a waking dream no more remarkable than setting down a teacup, and Felreil glanced at her and answered, “I liked the bellhop’s cards.”

Brigid smoothed her skirt while Felreil stretched the ache from his war-worn leg, and after a moment she laughed and said, “Cake, love?”

This is the end of the Brigid and Felreil’s journey, and I thank Denise for hosting SSC&B (Six Sentence Stories) which thoroughly stretched my creativity in a most enjoyable way. Thank you, Denise, and to all who followed along.  ©Misky 2006-2026.

    2. Perhaps this autumn they’ll invite you to visit. They are after all living in the cottage that adjoins the house that Renoir will buy in a few years. (grinning)

  5. If I may be so bold as to say Brigid and Felreil are officially on the ‘No Extraordinary Premise Required’ list at the Six Sentence Café & Bistro*

(Might I recommend one of the Privacy Alcoves that line the exterior wall (directly opposite the small stage). As Gatekeeper/Nick is a friend of ‘The Diary’ he surely will keep you apprised of events and such that your fictional downsprings might find…intriguing.)

*which, of course, confers a reciprocal invitation for those lifeforms/fictional projections currently en résidence at said Bistro

  6. The only good thing about the series ending is that reading it from the beginning to the end was another type of an experience. Seriously… With all the liturgies and everything, without waiting a whole week to… what happens next…

I will say it again: I loved this series very much

    And the ending was great!

    1. And that brought a tear to my eye — and a smile. Thank you so much for reading it again from start to end. It’s something that I haven’t done yet, and I must. Maybe while I’m Denmark the week after next.

  8. Such an eloquent epilogue, plus cake of course – but maybe there can be more with those two… what an honour it would be for us.

    1. Thank you so very much, Chris, and I agree — cake makes everything palatable. Brigid and Felreil might return one day for a visit, but they seem quite happy where they are for now. (besides, Chris, this series has been on the trot steadily for 5 months and 2 days, and I also need some recovery time).

  9. Maybe Brigid and Felreil will make an appearance on the roof? I like the thought of coming in through the hidden closet.

    1. Everyone left Room 215, Frank, which I think was the plan — so Brigid and Felreil returned to the peace and quiet of a sea breeze through the olive trees in Provence … where they’re enjoying cake and tea.
