Ten Things of Thankful

peonies

This week was filled with cars, friends, and weather that was really hot — temperatures that broke all previous records for May. Heat never used to affect me, but that was back when.

I sat in the shade reading the user manual for my car, and drinking homemade fizzy lemonade. I live where the number 35 is. 35C is 95F. I am thankful for lemons. And for shade.

Thankful for green, and scents of summer.

Thankful for home delivery of a large grocery order when it’s too bloomin’ hot to go outside and haul heavy bags into the house.

Thankful for Brigid’s Diary stories generated from Denise’s Six Sentence Story prompts. The Liturgy worksheet for creating the story is here

Thankful for one night where the temperature dropped below 20.5C/69F. Sleeping is easier when it’s not so hot.

Summer salads that don’t require cooking. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. So I did.

Cold Andalusian gazpacho soup with croutons. Easily made with tinned chopped Italian tomatoes. Okay, okay — no more food.

Foxgloves reaching for the sky. The bees love crawling in and out of the blossoms. Sometimes they just hum with all the buzzing.

Thankful for a new pair of extremely comfortable shoes.

An afternoon with an old friend. A slow walk. A long talk. We shared the book that Nick (Spira) and I created — b/w film photos and poems about stray dogs. He loved it.

“Sometimes I just need to hear a different voice,” he said, and asked if he might keep ST(R)AY… I’ll buy another copy for myself online.

  3. It’s so weird to see a 35c for the UK, when I was kid living in Nottinghamshire it was so rare there, I gather it is becoming more common?

    1. Yes, Paul, more common — global warming is showing its teeth. Continental Europe is also very hot at the moment.

  4. I remember as a child, that temperatures of 90F in the shade were a thing of wonder…
We (I assume the royal we) don’t mind your food grats – I was only teasing you last week, Marilyn – and who would not welcome hot-weather, get-out-of-the-kitchen food hacks…

    1. I know you were kidding, Andrew, but too much food isn’t good for anyone. (grinning)

At least we have a brief break from the heat today (max 27C), and rain (RAIN!) on Monday. The garden is so dry and SE Water is already sending text messages to reserve water. No rain for nearly 3 weeks, and the plants are stressed, which means green fly is everywhere.

Hope your week is brilliant, Andrew! ☀️

  6. Please, be thankful for all the food you want to be thankful for!

    The shoes look comfortable.

May you have a much cooler week to come.

    1. This week is much cooler and much wetter than last week. And we had a thunderstorm that was amazing. I rarely hear thunder booming like that for such a long period of time. And now the wind is blowing a gale. Lost power for a couple of hours, but all’s back on and running normally again. I hope your week is going well, Mimi.

  7. Oh my, it seems very hot.

In Estonia we too get those hot waves and we bought a portable air conditioner just to be able to sleep… Luckily the hot hasn’t arrived yet.

The blossoms are beautiful and that salad made me hungry too…

Hopefully next week is much cooler for you! Take care, was an enjoyable read.

    1. It’s much more reasonable (and seasonable) this morning, thank goodness: mid-20s. Laundry pegged on the line, and I’ve already had my morning walk. I hope your Sunday is lovely, Reelika.

  8. am totally jealous (I know, predictable) but what’s fun (and interesting) is reading of the contrast in the ‘when I was a kid’ relative to climate/average temperatures. for us here in southern New England we all remember hot weather as the rule rather than the exception, at least for this time of year.

evidently the opposite for you over there.

the salad looks good and the flower interesting (not to conflate the two Grats 6 & 8) lol

    have a cooler week ahead
