It's Still Life

I sat in the shade reading the user manual for my car, and drinking homemade fizzy lemonade. I live where the number 35 is. 35C is 95F. I am thankful for lemons. And for shade.

Thankful for green, and scents of summer.

Thankful for home delivery of a large grocery order when it’s too bloomin’ hot to go outside and haul heavy bags into the house.

Thankful for one night where the temperature dropped below 20.5C/69F. Sleeping is easier when it’s not so hot.

Summer salads that don’t require cooking. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. So I did.

Cold Andalusian gazpacho soup with croutons. Easily made with tinned chopped Italian tomatoes. Okay, okay — no more food. 

Foxgloves reaching for the sky. The bees love crawling in and out of the blossoms. Sometimes they just hum with all the buzzing.

Thankful for a new pair of extremely comfortable shoes. 

An afternoon with an old friend. A slow walk. A long talk. We shared the book that Nick (Spira) and I created — b/w film photos and poems about stray dogs. He loved it.

“Sometimes I just need to hear a different voice,” he said, and asked if he might keep ST(R)AY… I’ll buy another copy for myself online.
