The Old Woman With No Cat

The Cat Watches the Sky Slopes (A Tragedy in Four Paws)

The cat buries his face in the old woman’s sleeve.
β€œMake it stop,” he whimpers,
one eye peeking at the telly.
β€œThey’re falling.
Tumbling.
Cartwheeling through the snow.

WHERE ARE THEIR CLAWS?”

She strokes between his ears.
β€œThey have skis, cat.
And skill.
And helmets.”

β€œHelmets?
Helmets don’t protect dignity!
I fall off the sofa once … just once,
and you never let me forget it!
And they get medals for it!
It’s unfair!”

A skier catches an edge,
spins like a leaf in a gale,
and lands in a puff of powder.
The cat gasps.
β€œDid he… live?
Is there… aftercare?
Will he ever trust gravity again?”

β€œHe’s fine, cat.
He’ll get up and try again.”

β€œMadness,” he mutters,
climbing into her lap…

β€œWe are a fragile people,
you and I.
We understand that safety
is a warm lap,
a locked door,
a cup of tea,
and no sudden movements
unless there’s a feather involved.”

He watches a few more seconds,
then closes his eyes firmly.
“Wake me when they invent
a sport that involves
lying very still
and judging from afar.”

  1. What an excellent cat he is! Such a sensible puss, isn’t he, eh?
p.s. – I adore that song. Still grinning.

Luna? Out in the shrubbery just now! πŸˆβ€β¬›

  3. My cat agrees with this one. πŸ’–πŸŒ±πŸ’–

Draped across my lap and over one shoulder, he’s staring out the window & willing the snow to leave and the grass to grow. I sip my coffee and wisely keep my concept of time to myself; it’s only mid-February and Springtime is months away.

    1. I watched the neighbour’s cat this morning, side against my garden fence, and he’s soaking wet from the rain. A wet cat is not a cat that knows pleasure.

    1. πŸ˜‚ Not a fur ball chance of that happening. πŸˆβ€β¬› It would probably eat my crow. πŸ¦β€β¬›
