“The seed of a poem lay dormant in my heart.” ~ from “Winged Words”, Valsa George
You should’ve told me. Your first daughter. Eldest. The one you told, Watch over your little sister. You should’ve told me that you were dying. You should’ve known that I was not a fragile flower. My petals don’t fall at the slightest shake. Could I have saved you? No. But you could’ve saved me. Mum couldn’t bring herself to tell me either. She left it to a brother-in-law to tell me. Mum said tears are weakness. Up up, she’d say, her finger poking at your chin. Be brave. But I cried. I was brave, and cried. The seed of a poem lay dormant in my heart. Quiet, until the day you died. Awake small seed, and grow. And bugger all, it grew bigger than my heart could hold.
