11 April: A-to-Z Challenge

AI artwork: glass jar with smoke and vegetation inside

I is for Inversion

In a jar, a smoky dusty scent
Charred notes of black pepper
and weathered ash.
We’ve put the lid on.

It’s writing on the wall weather,
wood smoke stings my nose.

For A-Z Challenge. An Inversion: a departure from the usual increase or decrease in an atmospheric property with altitude. Specifically it almost always refers to a temperature inversion, i.e., an increase in temperature with height, or to the layer within which such an increase occurs. Written for the A-to-Z Challenge. Declared theme for the challenge is Weather. AI Digital Artwork is created using Midjourney. Imagery and poems ©Misky 2023 Shared on Twitter #amwriting #atozchallenge @midjourney @AprilA2Z

  3. Inversion layers are very familiar to me – if the cold air comes down and settles in with plants it will frost them – so we used to disrupt the inversion layers (bringing the cold up to mix with the warm) using sprinklers, helicopters or old fashioned smoke pots. Very cool word!

      1. Thanks, c. I think it’s probably the best AI image I’ve created yet.

    2. It’s an interesting one. Creates so many different conditions. When we lived in California, we were next to citrus orchard, and in the winter, they would use smoke pots when the temperature was due to drop. I’d forgotten about that until you mentioned it.

      1. Not the best for the air quality! They were doing the same thing in the 600 ‘s. The century of the 600’s!!

  4. Lovely poem about a disagreeable phenomenon. I’ve experienced eye-stinging temperature inversions in urban settings and they are not fun!

  6. Fantastic! Having lived in Colorado Springs for three years, I completely understand inversions.

  7. Temperature inversions say late Autumn in England with high pressure giving a clear day and woodsmoke rising only so far and the blues of smoke fading into the darkening sky…
