When Chimps Flew the Sky

We used to play a game,
back when there were 9 planets,
and Pluto wasn’t just a dog,

when chimpanzees flew in space,

back when nobody knew
how many galaxies were up there,
but we believed in Martians.

And as kids, we said things like

name ten kinds of clouds,
or name the parts of a blossom,
or name all the oceans,

or is King Kong really dead.

But when it came to naming
things our same height,
we couldn’t find a single thing.

It always makes me feel slightly sick when I think about them sending animals into space. But I do like this poem. It has that special Misky voice that I like so much. Can you name the parts of a blossom? I only learned last year about there being a part called a pistil.

  I absorbed a lot of information when I helped my dad study to become a Master Gardener, so yes, I knew all their little bits and bobs before I had any of my own.
