Just Sometimes
My dog doesn’t do
conspiracy theories or
Times crossword puzzles
but she likes to go for walks
and pull on ropes
to breaking point,
or at least she used to.
My dog doesn’t care
about iambic pentameter
or where words fall in poems
but she likes cold tiled floors
in summer heat and
laying by the fire in winter,
or at least she used to.
My dog doesn’t
understand giddy-up
or want postcards when
I’m away, and sometimes
I think I hear my dog,
sometimes I think my dog
is watching.
And just sometimes I think
my dog’s still here,
even though
she’s no longer with me.

Maybe. When she wants to.

Oh, she is still there. Something of her is, as long as you remember.

I’ll never forget her. She saved my sanity after my father died. I fell into a very dark place, and it was Molly who forced me out of the house (and the sofa) for daily walks. In her last year, she was both blind and deaf but we coped. It was when she had a stroke that I knew it was time to let her rest.

That’s the thing about dogs. They have completely selfless. Finbar was deaf too at the end, and had a massive stroke. Ran himself out of time. We miss them terribly, don’t we?

She’s still with you as evidenced by your poem. Beautiful tribute to a lovely little one.

I hope your Molly and my own Springer, JJ, met up somewhere over the Rainbow Bridge and are running free with utter joy!
