Laundry Day

Hand into his pocket, pulled it inside out,
and she found the note she’d  written him.

One small jar
of peanut butter,
please,
to replace the one
you emptied –

This is just to say it’s

a pity that you
didn’t tell me,
because
my toast was just
a smear of jam.

Love you more than William Carlos Williams
loves his plums.
