dVerse: Quadrille #13

The Birthday Dress

Time is beige. A sepia
moment on the run from
invisible. That’s me.
Two, maybe three.
New dress. Brown plaid.
Mum did my hair.
Ring curls.
My smile’s brighter
than sun. For Dad.
He’s the one
with the camera.
Smile, my girl.
Smile for your daddy.

  1. Oh so wonderful! I remember my daddy with the box camera pointed at me — and then his Polaroid that he said was a magical thing as the picture started to appear before your eyes. Love this captured moment of innocence.
And love how your eyes are crinkled here!!

  8. A beautiful manifestation of your parent’s love, Marilyn! Your brilliant beauty still shines through poems such as this, and those “crinkled” eyes! Sepia is the color of memory!

  13. What a cutie! Those box cameras and then the magical polaroids. My mom was the photographer. My dad frequently her subject. But the colors in this, A sepia moment on the run from invisible…before it totally fades. Lovely.
