The Heist

episode #3

Aurelia has three sets of plans open now, her latest computer-science coursework having taught her to distrust anything that pretends to be simple, and she works across the pages with the same excitement she brings to kernels, processes, and hidden structures, pausing only once to curse when two boundary lines refuse to agree.

The passage didn’t disappear,” she says at last, almost apologetically, then points to a later boundary line; “the property did” — enough, apparently, to draw the tall, thin man a little nearer from the hallway.

Chris lights up as if someone has just handed her Christmas, while both gargoyles crowd the plans, Hünga circles them with monumental suspicion, sniffing first one stone backside and then the other.

Nick folds his arms, which for him is less posture than verdict, and studies the shifted boundary while Aurelia explains how the rear section appears to have been absorbed into the neighbouring property during later alterations.

Something in me tightens at that, not fear exactly, but the old sensation of standing before a piece of history and realising the thing I thought had been lost was only hidden under another name.

Chris grins at all of us and says, “So we don’t have a missing passage at all,” and suddenly the alcove feels smaller, brighter, more dangerous: “we have a neighbour.”

A little music for this week’s Heist episode

  1. Brilliant scene, Marilyn.
And soundtrack born out of the Six!

As I unfold my hands and light a cigar, I say: this can go incredibly well or terribly bad… either way… fun!

    (PS: Hunga sniffing stone backsides🤣)

    1. I know it cuts against the grain for some people, but gosh, I had such fun making that song. And next week is already laughing in my head!

Delighted you had fun with it. 😆

    1. Thank you. That line came from my husband looking for the bread flour, which I informed him was in the bag labelled “strong flour”.

  3. in the words of someone/somewhere:

“If there is a door in a wall, it leads somewhere. Despite our reason assuring us that the outside of this wall is completely identical to the inside, the only way to know is to step through.”

(to paraphrase Heraclitus: It’s easy to accept that you can’t step in the same river twice…not so much that the foot retrieved is the same as the one submerged.)

    damn!*

*yeah total compliment on your Six**

    **y’all be careful now, hear?

    1. As Forrest Gump might well’ve said, “Careful is as careful does.”
I’m glad to know that the gargoyles have a cousin in New York (according to Chris). I understand that correspondences are winging it back and forth. Aye, what could possibly go wrong! (laughing)

  7. Brilliant, and seems that the Nervous Poet, as my alter ego, is exactly like me… never nervous when there is something to analyse and find. Super cool. I wonder what will happen next.
