07.10: A Response Poem

B&W drawing hand holding earth

This poem is in response to a Six Sentence Story, Untimely Utterances Part X, written by Nick/Spira. The line of response is: Life & death are the same breath drawn twice.

Recurrence

a star draws breath
in fire,
in ash, exhales
what fire takes in,

again.

a first page opens
where the last one closed,

dawn lifts the light,
evening folds it in,

one breath returning: finish and begin.

again.

we take it young, release it
when we’re through,

but nothing keeps the breath.

it passes on
through leaf and limb and lung,
through ocean, dust and stone,

until a distant star draws breath again,
each
continually
becoming the other.

again.

  4. I am so glad that my humble ink inspired your poem, Marilyn. Which is superb, as always, in its brevity. What a beautiful dialogue.

    1. I am equally glad that you enjoyed reading it. Creating a Response Poem to a friend’s own creation, can be risky — “What if he hates it?!”

And now you’ve given my curiosity something to play with: that photo and what MJ might do with it… I must try. Maybe tomorrow.

And again, I loved Part X. It’s perfect.
