The Distance Back
While my little boat moves on its moorings,
the day passes in mist
and pine-green,
and somewhere
between the water
and the trees,
childhood returns.
The world is wide again.
Trees grow touch-close to heaven,
and in the crystal of the water
the moon is comforted.
There is wind in my ears
and birds
find their perches again,
and for a while
nothing has been lost.
My boat rocks gently
at the small distance
between here and then.
