Dead Men Don’t Drown: #5

Wally Dog ceramic Staffordshire dogs in the window of an English house

(catch-up with all episodes here)

“Hi Mum, it’s me — ay’okay, well, sort of, because I popped up the shops for milk, bread, and a few bits, and saw two pottery Staffordshire dogs like Gran’s in the antique shop, so I went in to see whether they were worth anything.”

“No, not really, though if they had been I’d probably’ve flogged ’em because I don’t even like the things — no, jeeze, hang on, I’m keeping ’em, but when I told the girl Gran’s faced out towards the road, she actually offered her condolences.”

“Wait, what … what d’you mean, even when you were growing up they faced that way?”

I stare at the two Staffordshire earthenware spaniels on the windowsill, turned now to face indoors; with their backs to the harbour, the room gathers close around them, and something in their painted vigilance seems diminished, with nowhere left for their watching to go.

Mum rushes to jam jars, recycling, damp in the scullery, and whether I’ve eaten anything proper besides ice cream, while afternoon light thickens around the furniture and the dogs sit with their painted faces fixed on me.

Before the call ends, I cross the room and turn them back towards the harbour, as though facing them inward has interrupted a conversation that began long before I was born.

    1. Thank you! An experiment in one-sided conversation. It was fun. And the sound track — I always think of the Muppets when I hear that song.

  2. Besides the great title of your series there is something more wonderfully subtle about this, Marilyn. I love how two rather ordinary pottery dogs suddenly become part of a conversation stretching across generations – and that final gesture of turning them back towards the harbour says so much without explaining anything. Beautifully done.

  5. I have four miniature Ganesha idols with their heads tilted in different directions. I often align them to each other, if I sense discord in the house.

Funny thing. I once did throw away one little miniature because it literally creeped me out haha.

    1. Oh no no no! They didn’t turn on their own! (laughing) Fenella turned them inward toward the room, but returned them to look toward the harbour again.

  8. […] Thankful for Denise’s Six Sentence Story challenge, where talented writers build whole worlds in the briefest possible space. It has nudged me from poetry into an entirely different way of thinking, and I love both the challenge and the writers who, somewhere along the way, became friends. Here’s my episode this week: Dead Men Don’t Drown. what fun (the idea that you are seeing (and bringing into being a past that had not existed before this…even allowing for the ‘fictional’ nature of characters)

    1. I’m working from an outline this time so I can keep my head on straight, (grinning) which means for a change … I know how it’ll end! HA!

  12. Always look for the reset, when things get too ordinary? Turn those dogs to face the open harbor of possibility…
