If There Were No Love
if there were no love
I would still let summer’s last secret
find my face.
just for the love of it
to watch the lift and fall
of leaves giving themselves
to the breeze,
and if I believe
they are hope,
then they are.
I once knew a man
who said,
“I will die in a country
where people cannot
pronounce my name.”
he is still in my shadows,
sometimes whispering
in his own voice,
and if I believe
they are you,
then they are.
I am a wanderer,
and I have learned
hope does not need
to know my name
to find me.
