2408: Journal of Thoughts

wet watercolour in greys and blues, icy harbour with fishing boats

From a Sea-Salted Dock

We wore black.
Wore our pearls
and affection, spoke in

whispered words
that left us tongue-tied.

The sky watched,

tasted our tears,
and stirred our petrichor,

calm-scented
our grey-fringed hair.

We stood on a sea-salted dock,
and released his ashes
to the air
on the coldest day

February had ever seen.

Fishing boats iced and rocking,
frayed sails wind-stiff,
and slapping the air.

There with empty eel traps
and torn shrimp nets.
So empty.

  2. Reconsidering my summer shorts and bare feet…I’ve caught the black and white salt of your February day!

    1. It was when we released my father-in-law’s ashes — an island in southern Denmark. The sea was frozen all the way around the island so you could walk back to shore about a mile away.

  3. A very vivid poem. Makes me feel I’m back by the Mersey docks, maybe on my birthday, a frigid February. I enjoyed that track too.
