Ten Things of Thankful

Not a stellar week: started off with a tummy virus that wore me to the bone. A few days of that, and then it was gone. Then the rain and wind. A few days, and then it was also gone. So here’s this week’s 10 things for which I’m thankful, and trust me, it required a bit of imagination because this week hasn’t been the shiniest spade in my toolbox.

1) Forever thankful for every bee, which year on year seem fewer and fewer. This little treasure is enjoying the nectar from lupins.

2) It’s cherry season for a short while. Earlier in the week my dicky tummy didn’t want them. However —

I ate my share yesterday. Now we need to buy more.

3) Thankful for a walk in the nearby forest. This is not my usual forest. My usual has barricades up at the moment — I don’t know why, and nobody else seems to know either.

4) Thank you for the idea.

The Cat meets the new neighbour’s Cane Corso Italian Mastiff for the next few Sundays. The whole of the series is here.

5) Wind and torrential rain: I should be thankful for the rainfall but it came so fast and heavy that most of it rolled straight into the drains, but I am thankful that the trees are still standing, and thankful that the house is still standing, and the water barrels are full again.

6) The swans at the village pond. The flock come and go like a great spread of clouds.

7) French tuna in red peppers and olive oil. My goodness it is so good. The flavour, the texture, the mildness, oh the joy of bringing home goodies from St Malo.

8) A Chrysopa (lacewing) insect that (thankfully!) loves to eat aphids. Bon appétit, mon petit.

9) Thankful for silly hobbies: photos of doors, and photos of road signs with unusual names. This road sign is by Priory Farm in Nutfield.

10) Spent an afternoon helping at the Bird and Wildlife Rescue Centre nearby.

They do very good work there, and although I can’t offer regular hours this summer, I promised to do so during the winter. We have a lot of wildlife in our neighbourhood.

        1. Thank you, Reelika. The sardines in lemon and olive oil is my favourite. It’s such a treat in my opinion. But then I love fish of all sorts!

  5. is that a fox?

wind and torrential rains in Summer are one of my favorite weatheration (not damaging destruct, of course, just the wind through trees and other special effects)

good to hear of you recovery… mind the electrolytes after such an experience… (lol I keep several bottles of ‘Brawndo’* in the cupboard)

*go ahead ask! wait what am I typing you being the second quickest to the ‘really? you remember this??! with all the important things to life…you devote a neuron to this?

    have a good week

    1. Aye. That is a fox. We have a lot of them around here. Day and night. Badgers. Deer. Hedgehogs.

I love the sound of wind through leafy trees. It reminds me of Swedish summers. We have the same wind here because we’re close to the sea. The problem comes when the clay soil is water-logged and then wind knocks them over.

      Thanks, you too, Clark.

  6. I’m glad you are feeling better and hope it stays this way.

As much as I enjoy helping at the cat shelter, helping at a wildlife rescue must be equally rewarding if not more so.

Thank you for searching for your thankful things in spite of not seeing them at first glance.

    1. They have a high rewilding rate, so it’s unlike many centres who allow people to treat it as a zoo. I’m quite opposed to that.

      Have a wonderful week, Mimi.

  7. Glad you are recovered, Marilyn, great that you didn’t miss out on the cherries – I went to my local
Polish shop yesterday and bought some too…

It has rained for all of June up here in Yorkshire and it sounds like in Sussex too – nevertheless, have a great week…
