1206: Everywhere Poems

ai B&W image of hand holding a small ball

An Everywhere Poem: The Heatwave

The neighbours assemble on Facebook.
That house with no lawnmower.
Number 41, someone says,
with the dog.
That barks.

Dogs bark,
another says.

I’d like to complain
about feral cats —

that comment is
anonymous.

The pink peonies
are as big a soup bowls.

Foxgloves towering
beneath the apple trees.

He sits with one leg crossed,
scrolling Facebook,
reading me things
I’m not interested in,

sipping tepid coffee.

I decided to hate espresso
before I ever tasted it.

Then France.
Sugar.
Tiny cups.

Love at first sip.

Though I only drink espresso
in France.

And twice,
in Italy.

Wearing a bra
in this heat
is insanity.

So I’m not.

It’s 35.3°C.

Same as it ever was.
Same as I’ll be tomorrow.

Everywhere Poems don’t have a subject. They have a starting point and follow wherever attention leads. It’s — go for a walk and see where you end up.

  1. I repeat: create a “cold room/AirCon”.
35.3° C in the UK was unheard off. Not anymore; it’s a repeating occurrence.
Unless you are willing to drive around with Rn or Mc, which isn’t a bad alternative😁

    1. The county planning commission still hasn’t relaxed rules on noise decibels between houses, so even a heat pump isn’t allowed yet. Sooooo, we have these totally amazing Swiss fans that cool (uses some sort of ceramic thingy that takes the heat out of the air and blows it back cooled — I don’t understand the technology but so long as it works, I’m good.)

I also discovered that the Mc can blow cold air through the front seats. Nothing like a cold arse on a hot day. (or maybe that’s supposed to be the other way around) 😂

  2. A sharp and relatable poem that captures the small dramas of community life, using humor and observation to reflect how shared experiences can bring people together. ☀️🏡✨
