1006: dVerse Unpunctuated

a yellow paint splotch on a white background

Sad Winter Skin

When I was young
I wanted a yellow bedroom

I wanted sunny

We boasted
of evergreen
and a climate wetter
than a bath

Dad painted

although he was mostly
a postman

and an artist

but he didn’t do bedrooms
So mum painted it

washable matte
dripped from the tin

Fresh Egg Yolk

I liked naming paint colours

It’s too bright
Mum said

so she toned it down
with white

I called it
Sad Winter Skin

in a sweep
of a brush

she had dimmed

my sun

  1. So many styles of writing poetry… and you dance through them all effortlessly.

    1. I just have so much fun writing poetry — dancing is a perfect analogy. Thanks.

    1. Parents tend to fall back on this line: ‘it is my house not yours, and you can suggest a colour, but the choice isn’t yours because when we eventually want to sell it, thirty-some years from now, guess who will have to repaint it for resale.’

When my parents sold the house I was raised in, it still had my mum’s avocado-colour stove and fridge — and that was the late-70s.

      Aye, sympathies.

  4. Oh, Marilyn, I love the use of colour in this poem tinged with sad winter skin. I did once have a butter yellow bedroom. Today we too have ‘a climate wetter than a bath’!

    1. My kitchen is two-tone: Farrow & Ball call it Dove and the other Chalk. I call the Dove colour ‘Lost in a Fog’ and the Chalk colour is After School Clapping Erasures. Lavender has always been ‘Sleepy Bee Colour’.

My little EV Renault R5 is the brightest yellow on a colour chart called Yellow Pop (code EQJ). I love it! I finally have a proper yellow .

Here: rain; sun; rain; rain… hotting up this weekend again though.

  6. Too bright she said. Well, she toned down the yellow walls but you were just getting tuned up! Your short phrases/line breaks/spacing are very effective, who needs punctuation.

  8. Sunny Yellow is great! Pastel not so much! I love what you did with the prompt and poem.
