Ten Things of Thankful

peonies

Just back home from a week road trip to Normandy in France. We drove our little electric car, and only once did I growl at Peder about not letting the battery drop below 15%. I love France. Love Normandy. The scenery. The history, that’s so closely tied to England. The food. The Food!! Amazing. So are a few highlights from the week, although there are a ton of photos on my Facebook feed.

I. Mussels and frites. I love.love.love them, and I’d be really thankful if I ate them more often. French beer, too, and I’m not one to drink very often (maybe a glass of wine on my birthday and a wee glass of champagne at New Years) but French beer is really good. And icy cold, unlike British ale.

II. I am thankful for respect of history. And roads paved with Setts (quarried granite chiseled into squares) because it is so much easier for me to walk down hills. Cobblestone, which are river stones and smoothed by water, and tough on ankles and knees — are those with sight issues. (Dinan, France)

III. Thankful for tinned French sardines. Bought a lot to bring home. Lemon and olive oil, chilli and olive oil, green peppercorn and olive oil. Can’t wait to open a tin.

IV. He was very happy with his choice of dessert, and I was thankful that he looked so pleased.

V. Thankful that the weather held for the most part until we were due to leave St Malo, and goodness me, what a storm blew in.

VI. Thankful to see Rouen Cathedral again. It’s a beautiful place full of history (often tragic).

Glad that I caught Peder walking to the main entrance as it gives an idea of the scale and perspective.

VII. How did people in the 12th century build such an amazing structure?! I am always amazed by their abilities — we think we are so clever and advanced now.

I am thankful that these beautiful structures are still with us.

VIII. Thankful that I caught this lovely man concentrating on carving a piece of wood.

His dog was asleep under the table, and woke when I spoke to the man. I didn’t buy anything, but I did give him money to buy a lovely lunch and a treat for his dog.

IX. Thankful to spend time with this beautiful painting called Enigma by Alfred Agache (1888). It is huge, from floor to ceiling, and just stunning.

I am thankful for art.

X. Bees. Bees! Thankful.

  3. I had moules frites last week, too. But alas, from Tesco. And Rouen used to be one of my boltholes. It was an achievement to get back there in 2024.

      1. I had help. I offered to take my daughter, because she had loved it there, too. I had paid for a two-berth cabin, a twin room etc so it didn’t cost any more. But she used an app to buy train tickets at Le Havre while I was still trying to get my glasses out! And she walked up the hill – was it St Aignan? – and took excellent photos of the city, all on her iPhone! So we both had a good time.

        1. We also booked a cabin. Helps to kill the time. Newhaven to Dieppe/return. Did you also go into Dieppe? Great little restaurants along the marina.

          1. No I’ve never sailed that route. Ever since I’ve lived over this way I’ve sailed out of Portsmouth. I love Saint Malo but le Havre is limited.

  4. What a delight! The cathedrals in Europe are astounding. People then were people now but with a little less technology to help them along is all.

…and odd, thing* your music choice is from the Eibigen Abby (well, sorta, it was founded by Hildegard**) where we have the ‘fictional’ location of one of the chapters of the Order of Lilith

    *yeah, ikr?

** quite the story there… medieval feminism (or an effort in that vein)

  8. The cathedrals in France are breathtaking. One sits awestruck at the beauty and detail and wonders – how long did it take to build! Love the pictures at your Facebook feed.
