1402: Ten Things of Thankful

european robin building a nest; words Ten Things of Thankful

We’ve had 42 days of rain, not all day (thankfully!), but the reservoirs are full again (thankful), and the water tables are nearly where they should be (thankful) — however the lawn is completely slurpy-squishy, which isn’t going to percolate deeper any time soon. But this week reminded me that gratitude is often not loud, or grand, but a pause where breath becomes visible (it’s soo cold), and we realise we are still here.

1. For the ever so slight hint of green in the trees. Blackthorn white blossoms are beginning to appear also.

The Irish call blackthorn straif, which sounds similar to strife; it’s bad luck to bring blackthorn into your house. Christian tradition suggests that the thorns on Jesus’s head were blackthorn.

2. Thankful for Waze. It diverted us around a multi-vehicle accident, and a 90-minute queue in stormy weather on the motorway.

3. Thankful that we made it home safely.

4. Thankful that people walking in the forest aren’t cutting the naturalised croci, snowdrops, and daffodils to bring home.

5. For enough leftovers from the roast chicken to make a lovely chicken and veg soup. Soup, lovely soup.

6. For 20-minutes of precious sunshine before it resumed raining.

I am thankful I’m not visiting Copenhagen this week because they’re up to their Lacoste alligator logos in snow and ice.

7. Watching the (female) robins build nests in the garden. It makes my heart happy.

It’s amazing how good a phone’s camera is. This one is cropped.

8. For Denise’s Six Sentence Story.

Follow along as Brigid and Felreil flee England during the Swing Riots for France in the mid-1800s. They discover there’s rebellion everywhere.

9. That obstacles are balanced with a determined heart to enjoy a thoroughly fun day doing what I love.

10. Thankful to find things that make me stop, if only for a heartbeat, and say, yes— this is enough. This is good.

    1. Don’t think that Lando will repeat that form in 2026. Sir Lewis might be sitting in a much improved car this year! 🏎️

    1. Isn’t she sweet? They are really aggressive though when another bird tries to steal their nesting material.

      1. Oh yes, birds are like that. I would get a bit miffed too if someone tries to steal from my nest

  3. Wonderful list with variety sharing the splendor of an interesting week. It is great to have rain, although it drops continuously. Even rain can have its own season.

Wishing you a nice week ahead.

  5. So you are a not so secret petrolhead, Marilyn – who would have thunk it? Robins in Ireland are much more aggressive generally…

Bad luck to cut down a thorn tree too…

  7. I forgot to put it on my list, but I am thankful for rain, too. We’ve had a few days, and we have more precipitation–including snow–in the forecast. Here in Utah, we count on a good snowpack to fill the reservoirs for summer, and we’ve had a dismally low amount of snow so far this season. So I’m definitely thankful for snow in the forecast!

Your robin photo is lovely. It is impressive how good phone cameras have become!

    1. We have a Yellow Warning of rain and wind for the next 2 days. SE England is already flooded so this extra rain is problematic in those area. Fingers crossed that the weather service is being pessimistic.

  8. Grat #3 resonates, though I have to admit, much as love driving, night-driving in rain is less fun than it used to be

We’re still a few weeks shy of birds doing the nesting thing here in southern New England… robins and cardinals seem to the aggressive ones here too… not quite as psychotic as red squirrels (one of the two dominant spieces of ‘tree rats’, the red one, half the size of grey squirrels just don’t let up! lol

we’re finally getting no precip, but temperatures still struggle to get above freezing in the daytime, subsequently the snowpack is little diminished

    have a good week

  9. I’ve been watching two magpies collecting twigs and debris from my garden, flying away in a rush into the tree (nearly at the top, and it’s a very tall tree). I tried to take a photo but it’s difficult with a phone. I’ll try again with my old Canon, and see if that works. Oh! And it was light until almost 6pm today. So nice.

Best wishes for your week also.
