4.12: Ten Things of Thankful

1. Thankful that my nerves held. One of the things that terrifies me: public speaking. Thistle = metaphor: prickly nerves.

2. Discovered why the boiler was leaking water. New part ordered; it arrive the next day. Thank you DPD. Seal fixed before the next storm blows in off the Atlantic.

3. Nine more days, and I’ll be in Bogotá with my grandchildren, daughter-in-law and youngest son. That’s not my DIL; it’s a lovely woman seeking shade at the entrance to an old church in Bogotá.

4. Thankful for imagination: stitching meals together from this and that in the fridge so it’s empty before we leave next week.

5. A brief break of sunshine in a long spell of damp-bone-grey winter weather.

6. I’m thankful for optimism. Meliorism. Perception. Like this shot of a wee small sprout of sea grass in the sand that looks like it might conquer the beach. It’s all perception.

7. A chat with a woman selling French cheese at Borough Market in London. It often happens: strangers strike up a conversation and tell me their life story. She did — I’m always thankful that my ear is theirs.

8. Christmas joy that puts a smile on the face of otherwise grumpy Londoners. Well, most of them.

9. My crow. As steady a friend as anyone might want.

10. A walk in my favourite forest.

  1. Another good ten Misky. Why were you public speaking? Number 8 made me laugh 😂 I do the same thing when I am heading off for a while. Some inventive meals are concocted

    1. I had to pop by the shops and buy a few things this week. Annoying. Creativity has its limits, according to my husband. (grinning)

  2. A very interesting and diverse list. Waiting for a holiday is exciting. Hope you can take some photos of the scenery & etc to share in your future TToT. Warm wishes for your restful week before you leave.

    1. Thank you very much. I imagine this coming week will be a bit frantic!

  3. #1 Yes why were you public speaking – especially if it makes you nervous…

#2 Plumbing skills as well as a poet – who knew!

#3 Bogota – isn’t that in the mountains – hope your lungs are strong!

#5 The season when you can see the extent of the Ivy…

#6 I purloined a single leaf of prickly pear from the seaward edge of the dunes in Portugal and in one year it is a foot tall – I reasoned it wasn’t a good place for it to grow -an extra high tide or storm surge would have taken it…

#7 Londoners are so loath to talk and too I will lend my ear to anyone – this poor woman must have been gasping for conversation!

    #8 Very jolly!

#9 You’ve talked about this crow before Marilyn – lovely to meet him…

    #10 Understandably so…

Have a good week and I reckon we should see you once more before your trip?

    1. A lecture: history of the Puits des Saints-Forts at Chartres. It’s a contractual obligation. I’m a fixed term tutor (social anthropology). No plumbing skills — I told Grok the scenario and we eliminated the obvious. If it was gas or plumbing, I’d not have touched it. My lungs are utter rubbish, thanks to catching Covid during 2nd lockdown. I’ve twice had to visit A&E in Bogotá for oxygen. Bogotá is a plateau, but it’s at a very high elevation 2,640 meters (8,660 ft).

      1. Still not much the wiser about your talk or social anthropology for that matter. Have a great trip and hope you stay out of the hospital this time…

  4. Enjoy the time with your grandchildren. Meals before travel can be interesting, but it looks like you came up with some very yummy creations!

  5. Every thankful is a separate delight. I don’t have to tell you to enjoy the grandchildren, may you weave more memories than any of you can hold.

  6. Bogotá! Very cool (for a destination). And…and! don’t forget to pack your derby!*

We have crows here as well, though not nearly as sociable as yours seems to be.

Love Grat #6 total metaphor for the challenge of writing and such
