27.11: Ten Things of Thankful

words "Ten Things of Thoughtful" with a cartoon image of a viking carrying a basket of food

… plus a few AI images created on Midjourney

1. Fabulous old words that really shouldn’t be archaic, like GLOAM or GLOAMING archaic, twilight, dusk, the fall of the evening. Germanic fem.

two old men watching the sunset over the ocean

2. Spicy tinned tomato and limp vegetable soup with orzo and big fat prawns. That’s orzo not ouzo. And that’s a real photo, not AI. 😂

I love emptying the fridge and calling it soup.

3. Thankful for an extra thick blanket on the bed; it was -7C one night. For you Fahrenheit-favouring folk, that’s about 19.5F.

4. Thankful that all the frozen-dead-wilted-rotting summer plants are now composting into lovely stuff for the worms to play in. Everyone needs playspace.

worms in the soil playing and having fun.

5. Marks & Spenser boot socks for my walks in the forest. And black and white poke-a-dot gummy wellies — I might need a new pair; these are getting a tacky, gummy stickiness about them.

6. Thankful for familiarity: ScandiKitchen delivered my order of proper stinky-squeaking cheese, pickled herring plus another in curry sauce, Baltic smoked mackerel, and salty liquorice, my favourite pate (leverpostej), and Danish salami (that’s for he who must be appeased occasionally)

7. An early night in a nice warm bed with a book, Scattered Minds by G Maté. This book is a complete eye-opener.

8. Thankful we finally have a gas and electricity “Smart Meter” that works. I won’t have to crawl through winter-twiggy bushes to read itsy-bitsy numbers on a little box, and then tell EDF what our numbers are. Smart meter, my arse. It took 4 years for Électricité de France to replace it.

9. Thankful for an efficient international postal service that delivers to the correct address. I won’t complain that it took 10-days. Nope, I won’t.

I won’t.

10. A walk in the forest, kicking up leaves, breathing in the cold Nordic air (that’s the prevailing wind direction lately) — laughing and howling (it’s exercise) at the fog. That’s a real photo, not AI. Pretty as a picture.

May your week be the quiet in the midst of a storm, the smile in a story, and the heart that makes all magic beat.

    1. Thank you! This was the perfect accompaniment as I washed up the pots and pans, dried everything, and then threw it all back into the drawers. There’s nothing like a wee bit a demonic energy to plough through the clean-up of prepping for feast.

  2. On a shiny day, my very unsmart meter will run backwards on account of my solar panels. Beat that, EDF.

    1. Nooooooo. Truly? Do you feed it back into the grid?

We have a new “monitor” that shows the electricity and gas usage through the day. Main powered but it has a rechargeable battery … that eventhough it’s constantly plugged into the mains still losses 2% every single day. EDF says “Don’t worry about it; it still works on the mains.”

      1. Yeah the I stood in the garage and watched the thing run backwards. Has to be very sunny though. But you don’t really get solar to save money. Mainly, I allowed one of these companies to install a new gas meter, must be 20 years ago. Guy messed it up, said “tough, I’m finished for the night” and left me with no central heating or hot water.

  4. I admit to not appreciate AI art at all. The various machines are fed by original artworks without asking permission from the maker of the work. Various writers and visual artists are suing AI companies for breaching their copyright. It’s a machine’s work, not the work of the individual who fed it a few prompts. The cartoon style the machine produced is familiar to me but can’t place the orignal cartoonist right now. A search brought up a few cartoonist’s work these here could have been taken from. But I’m glad your post arrived. The postal service here in South Africa has become near obsolete and it is a great pity.

    1. Yes, I know you dislike AI art — but it was the right choice for me here.

      1. Would you consider using AI to write poetry?

        1. No. I’m a poet, not an artist.

  6. busy morning (for me) here in Comméntville*

I appreciate your participation and the amount of Reader Comments it generates… in the Before Time, when Lizzi R reigned with quiet authority, the comment section was every bit a village square all Sunday-morning-chatting**. I am getting that vibe here with your TToT posts. Very cool

enjoyed the walking in the woods photo… ours is similar but instead of fog/mist we have wood smoke blurring the lines***

*I was hoping for a continental. 1880s feel with the unwarranted accént (lol)

**and, as with the ‘real’ world, such interactions are varied in tone and welcome… I think I will hold back on my (re)introducing the old ‘thread-jumping’ i.e. the equivalent of “oh, did I just overhear you say….”

*** in case you have similar atmospheric conditions, last night we jokingly suggested to the other, ‘Maybe we should give the ‘Jones’ a gift certificate for properly-aged firewood’ (the volume and smell of un-seasoned firewood being quite distinct)

    1. I am delighted that I joined as a hostarina* and I love keeping track of the thankful stuff during a week. This week is already shaping up!

Wood smoke is rare around here. In this county, open bonfires are not permitted. Having said that, I love the scent of it.

      *a not-real word (yet).

  7. I’ve always loved the term, “in the gloaming.”

Emptying the fridge and calling it soup or a casserole was the staple of our existence when we were feeding many mouths all the time.

Hooray for worms, and the post office when they get it right by whatever means.

I love your photos and am sad we now have to say, Not AI. My pictures aren’t AI, so far, I’ve avoided using it at all for myself (although when I go on a site to buy something and they have a chatbot, I know it’s not a person).

    1. I always give our postman a little gift at Christmas of cash, and I am looked after much better than the other neighbours who refuse to give a little something extra to thank them for the care and attention. Besides, my dad was a postman, and I remember him saying he always looked after those who looked after him. I do the same with the bin men (garbage men, I think you call them), because they do a really good job of taking away rubbish.

Hope your week is a joy, Mimi.

  8. A wonderfully eclectic list of Thankfuls, Misky. #3? Always say yes to extra blankets in that kind of cold!
I love that your wellies have polka dots, perfect for walks around town and especially in the forest.
