18 Sept: A Thursday Door

red front door, climbing rose, red polka dot boots, house is a blue colour

A Chinese Jueju poem *

Door facing door—no path seems clear,
One room holds grace, one room’s a mirror.
I reach the hall to seek a way out,
And open a door… to my former self.

*Jueju means “cut-off verse” and is a very concise poetic form. It contains four lines (a quatrain). Each line typically has five (五言) or seven (七言) characters. The poem often includes: Parallelism or antithesis in lines 2 and 3, and a sharp, often poignant or witty turn in the final line.

Bushboy (Brian Dodd) shares photos of doors, but not just any doors. Spectacular doors from his journeys. Dan’s Thursday Doors opened the door on this. I love doors of all sorts. I’ve trawled through my photos and found a few to share.

  3. I was unaware of this form. I shall have to do a little looking deeper. Lovely selection for Doors- I am sincerely hoping the large double doors are a closet.

    1. I like short-form poetry, but I’m often frustrated by what feels like arbitrary constraints. I think I cheated a bit on the jueju — I slipped a couple of multi-syllable words into the mix. As for the double doors, I can’t recall but even the closets were proper room-size. In places this old, the rooms become multi-purpose and the walls are moved around to suit the era and funds available.

  7. I love a few taut lines that demand a second and third, and maybe fourth, reading. What a great partnership in words and image.
