12 Sept: Ten Things of Thankful

words: Ten Things of Thankful on the left with autumn veg and fruit on the right side

In no particular order:

1. I am thankful that the English language has progressed beyond St Patrick’s 5th century Tale of a Nation (although I adore the word “docus” – a silly person): “Eh man, but ye maun be an unco docus to mistak the yowlin’ o’ a wheen dougs for the squeelin’ o’ ghaists an’ deevils!”

2. The Apostle Trees: Or should I say, My Apostle Trees, because the county arrived with clipboards and land registry documents with official wax seals, and informed me that the two trees in question are on my property (even though they’re on the other side the fence). So it’s up to me to remove the limb from my tree since it’s in my garden.

“Go ahead, son, try to pick it up — go on,” I put my hands in my pockets and waited, “Yes, so if you can’t pick it up, how do you expect your granny to pick it up,” to which he replied, “You’re not my granny,” to which I laughed, “Lucky you.”

He went back to his little white van and returned with a chainsaw. I am thankful that’s done.

3. I am thankful this is not the last rose of summer. The scent should be the prime ingredient in every inhaled breath.

4. Chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven, and a glass of cold milk.

As a snack, m grandmother used to let me dunk freshly baked bread into a bowl of thick buttermilk. Yum.

5. A week of rain, and the Rudbeckia is alive, fully recovered, and blooming again. Thank you, Freyr, assuming that this was your doing.

6. Two weeks ago, the lawn was dead, stubbled hay. Then it rained. A lot. This is why we never waste precious water on the lawn. Now it’s lush and green again. Thankful for a bit of rain during our drought.

7. Our water butts (connected to the downspouts) collected enough rainwater to fill all 4, for which I am very thankful because we are not permitted to use the hosepipe for water until this drought is finished, which may well be into next year before the local reservoir is full again.

8. A heart-shaped beefsteak tomato in the greenhouse. I mean, isn’t it just lovely?!

9. A long walk at Eastbourne, fish and chips, ice cream on the pier (off in the distance), and the occasional bite of autumn in the air.

10. Thankful for the challenge of writing to Denise’s Six Sentence Story

  1. I know how you feel about trees and plants on the other side of the fence.

Your cookies look good. I made a batch in my oven for the first time and they expanded to become as flat as little pancakes.

Wishing you a wonderful week. ahead.

    1. I was hoping that mine would flatten a bit more, but they were very tasty (were, being the operative word, as we ate them already!) I wish you a very happy weekend, also.

  2. ah! the shedding of (tree) limbs!

here we have mostly pines trees, much de-limbing (however, during windstorms the sound through the forest is worth it…)

also, to tie to our own TToT… the internet!! I took a quick drive down Royal Parade courtesy of streetview, google maps!

    excellent architecture!

    fun

    1. My parents had a lot of pine trees on their property, and at certain times of the year the pollen blowing off them could tint the air a dijon colour. Mum eventually developed a severe allergy to the pollen; her eyes would swell shut. But on a hot day, the resin/pitch released such a lovely scent (and typing this, I swear I could just now smell it.) Wishing you all the best for the week.

      1. ahh! the ‘Yellow Wind’ (our term for that time of year). It is cool to watch…from inside the house, windows quite tightly shut.

  3. Fallen limbs from the trees, they can be such a point of contention, I’m glad this one is no longer lingering on the to do list.

May your reservoir be full by year end.

    1. I can see a few more limbs that look suspiciously bare and dead, so they’re apt to fall this winter also. The county guys said, “just cut them up and throw them over the fence.” I nearly laughed, but they were serious.

All the best to you, Mimi, for the week.
