24 January: Ten Things of Thankful

red tulips with the words Ten Things of Thankful

In no particular order:

  1. Video calls: Nico wanted to see the house again; he thinks he’s forgetting what it looks like, so we carried around the laptop, room to room. He wanted to be sure we’d made up “his” bed with clean sheets.

2. Bless Luisa and Nico’s smiles when I showed them the pile of beach pebbles and seashells that (their parents) left behind. How can one not be thankful for a child’s smile.

3. Horoscopes that make me laugh:

“Don’t try to convince others to agree with you. Be patient – everyone is grumpy today.”

(image is created using Midjourney).

4. Good advice to follow my instincts. Thank you.

(Midjourney again)

5. That Emma (eldest granddaughter: 16) Whatsapp’d me just after midnight to ask what she should eat with chili con carne. Emma knows she can text me any time, day or night. “Anything you darned well want, except rice,” I said, and then I suggested that she stir in a small square of dark chocolate. Yes, I know beans need a carb to metabolise but when I want chili, I just want chili (with sour cream and onion and cheese and slices of avocado), please.

6. Denise’s Six Sentence Story prompts and the Wakefield Doctrine

7. Writing Found Poetry sourced from Ragnarök, The Elder or Poetica Edda, Commonly known as Sæmund’s Edda, a study of Teutonic Mythology. For me, it’s like scrying. Here’s a recent one.

8. I am thankful I didn’t have to pay a repairman £99.00 to fix the water dispenser in the fridge. I fixed it. Unplugged. Thawed. Plugged it back in. Voilà! Water and ice again.

9. Thank.you.thank.you that this cold virus is nearly history. I still have a cough that would make a walrus envious, but that’s what happens when you live with long-covid.

10. The magpies are collecting twigs and mending nests while a ‘red flag’ weather warning is issued for Storm Éowyn. (my photo; not ai)

ps: red flag just lowered to yellow.

  2. Your blog is wonderful and your posts are inspiring and full of poetry! And maybe that’s why I never dare to say anything about it because I’m afraid of disturbing the harmony 🙂

  3. Grandchildren are the best! My youngest asked me today if I was going to pick her up “in three minutes” to take her to the library. Sadly, hundreds of miles separate us, so (like you) I rely on technology to keep those lines of communication open.

Glad you were able to fix your fridge!

  4. the successful self-fix of most things, especially, though, major household appliances is such a good feeling.. in now small part for the sense of self-sufficiency. not like we shouldn’t call a professional but when we manage it ourselfs… way better

  5. A wonderful list. Dark chocolate in the chili would be very interesting. As for the rice, down here, we eat it with everything.
