In no particular order:
1. Nico and Luisa live in Bogotá. Year round it’s 20°. Frost? What’s frost, asks Nico. We go outside and I write their names on the patio table – it’s thick with hoar frost. What’s a hoar, asks Nico … as he leans over to lick the tabletop. His mother grabs her chest as if expecting a heart attack. “No, Nico,” I say, “I think your squirrel probably wee’d all over this table yesterday.” This explains Nico’s expression.
2. I am not a devotee of winter; I survive winter in order to see the return of spring, but I am always thankful for nature’s magic.
3. Nico’s Christmas wish comes true. “Nana, you really are magic!” he said. He said he wanted snow for Christmas.
4. I am thankful for harnesses on the climbing wall, which is about 6 metres high (20 feet roughly). Luisa excelled, climbing all the way to the ceiling. Nico couldn’t get down soon enough, and I alerted the supervisor to let him down and release the harness.
He tried again a few minutes later.
5. Ice cream when it’s -4°c outside. Children want ice cream even if they’re asleep. And I say, yes, why not.
6. Wild muntjac deer in Woburn Forest. These deer, who are miniature in size (about the size and weight of a medium dog) were imported in the 1800s from China. Now they’re a pest who reproduce twice a year and eat everything in sight.
7. For Sarah. Thank you. For her energy and magic and smile. I wrote her a letter. Page after page, and then stepped outside as snow fell and set light to each page … one by one – and watched the smoke curl and rise. Rest peacefully, Sarah.
8. For three weeks with John and Gabi and Luisa and Nico. I am thankful for the memories they’ve given me. I hope they will return home tomorrow with memories of me also.
9. I am thankful to resume writing Denise’s Sixes again.
10. Beyond words, I am thankful that I saw the Milky Way this week. Apparently, here up north, it’s better viewed in the spring through summer, but I saw it … it was dim but it filled my heart completely.
