15 Nov: Ten Things of Thankful

words "10 THING OF THANKFUL" with pink peonies

In no particular order

1. I am more than thankful that the supermarket has fresh fruit back in the bins. Sainsbury’s even has watermelon, which I didn’t buy. Watermelon should be a summer fruit, but I bend my moral footprint stick when it comes to strawberries – my husband loves strawberries in his oatmeal. I refuse to eat oatmeal; it makes me gag. I’m thankful I don’t have to eat it.

2. I am utterly thankful that the supermarket has an ample supply of ice cream … although the bread aisle had an echo – no bread … well there was no bread after I bought the last loaf.

3. Sunday breakfast. A picture is worth a thousand words, and as one should never speak with ones mouth full …  just look at the photo.

4. I forgot to buy Greek yogurt and horseradish sauce this morning (horseradish for tonight’s roast beef), and I’m thankful that a forgetful mind (I forgot my shopping list) means I can browse another grocery store for goodies that I didn’t intend to buy.

5. Armistice Day was 11 November. I’d be so thankful if we stopped killing one other, and that people were able to live peaceably with their choices.

6. I helped a mouse along its way this morning. It was looking at me through the glass patio doors when I came downstairs. And then it tumbled over on its side. I held it in a towel and sang a 5 note tune that my grandmother taught me long long ago. There was nothing I could do for this delicate creature, except to open a door. He fled this life quickly. I am thankful for old knowledge and the continuation of tradition.

7. For the few electrum-coloured leaves still clinging to the trees behind my house. Soon I’ll be listening to the creak and groan of bare limbs in the wind again.

8 Without hesitation: Six Sentence Stories. The opportunity to manifest my imagination into sentences, and to read the remarkable sentences of others.

9. For the sound of the local ancient church bells from Worth church across the road. It’s an interesting church with a long history, and the link above leads to an article on Wikipedia about it, if you’re interested in truly ancient English churches. The local church is tightly tied to the Abbey, which is a leisurely (albeit rambling) walk on a lovely summer day through the forest. Dom Mark Barrett, who is the 7th Abbot of Worth Abbey kindly allows me to research the Abbey archive, cartularies and necrologies for my post-grad work.

10 … and finally, for every last one of you, thank you, but who’s counting.

    1. Yes, it’s an English thing. Sometimes, fried mushrooms, too. Lovely!
