Remembering Her

I always meant to say
you were the magic that I wished for,
the way that you’d

twist
newspaper into tight bowtie shapes,
stack kindling
against it,

and light a fire that silenced a room
for a well spent moment or two.

And then would come that snap.
That spark.

You would light up a dark niche
like a song leading me
out of our precious
darkness.

You said I was so bright that
sometimes it hurt.
You, always clear, a point
in the darkness to follow.

Always there
like silent smoke, wise as
your measured voice.

I always meant to say that.

  1. Love the idea of starting a fire with paper bow-ties…
    I use little twigs tied together which the kids call “witchy stix”.
