16 August: Journal of Thoughts from Last Week

A Journal of Thoughts from Last Week

The O In Oh

Mum didn’t want a dog, didn’t want cats, didn’t much have room in her life for kids either she once told me, but like it or not here I am, I replied. I was 12. To my eyes, she was as old and rough-tongue as Sahara sand, and my grandmother was old and wise like pyramids. And now I’m old as pyramids, and my grandson wants to know if I’m dying, and I say “Not today, Nico. Not today,” and he says, “Okay, so can we make gingerbread men when I visit you at Christmas?” And I nod and tell him that we’ll dress him in wintery clothes and he’ll be sweetness the colour of Sahara sand.

    1. 🤣 Noooo, we’re putting clothes on the gingerbread man (like in his favourite storybook), not on Nico, although obviously he’ll be wearing clothes!
