Seven Little Bits
1.
Mum inherited her mum’s crystal vase, who inherited it from her mum, and my sister has it now, although it’s not Victorian, which is what Mum said it was, and it’s not crystal either, but it is a vase unless you pour milk in it, in which case it’s a milk bottle.
2.
My sister made a wooden box in wood shop class … she said she liked the scent of sawn wood, which Dad was quick to say was sawdust, and I was quick to say that I liked the scent of petrol, and Mum said that explained a lot, but I don’t know what.
3.
When was 6-years old, I nearly burnt down the garage playing with matches. Enough said about that, I think.
4.
Well, except to say that I lit a pile of newspaper in the wooden box that my sister made in wood shop class, and the box smelled real nice while it burnt, kind of smelled like sawdust.
5.
Mum could make grass whistle, she’d place a blade of grass between her two thumbs and blow on it. My sister could do it also, but I couldn’t. I just ended up with wet thumbs.
6.
Mum wanted our house painted that blue colour that you see on weather-beaten houses near the sea, a sort of salty blue colour, but everyone called our house the Grey House because it wasn’t blue enough.
7.
Mum had the same avocado-colour stove that my grandmother had … Mum inherited Grandmother’s stove, and the oven never worked so Mum kept all of her cookbooks in there, but one day the oven started working after Dad replaced a fuse, and all of Mum’s cookbooks baked, but I had nothing to do with that fire.
