Silent as a Relic
mostly picture books
when I was young,
photos of stars teetering
on the edge of space,
or life below the sea,
strangely benign, buoyant,
silent as a relic that lost
its voice and history,
and I always thought
it was a remarkable lie,
the greatest error to
believe we’re alone,
or that it’s a god thing.
