8 April: NaPoWriMo

Black Ford Victoria 1956, white sidewall tyres.

That Car Was God’s Triumph

That’s what Dad always said.
He loved his old Ford Victoria,
though Lord knows why.

The drivers door had a croaking creak,
the floor puddled after a rain,
and the brakes froze-up like a fridge.

Remember how you fixed the fan belt
with bark from a twig?

It was baroque black, fit for mourning.
Shined as if it were shellacked.
White sidewalls, and curb feelers
so as to not scuff the wheels.

You sold it for a Comet.
We named it Haley.

    1. That’s a very good choice! I like his voice, too. Thank you.

    1. I swear my dad named everything, and if he didn’t know what something was called, he would make up a name. 😂

      1. That’s so funny. My husband, when he was a teenager, named his first car Myrtle.

  2. Love this one, Misky. Sadly, I learned never to name a car, when the first one that I gave a name to, Gina, was involved in a head-on with me driving. She saved us, Gina did, but I never christened another car after that experience.

    1. It’s funny, but I’ve never had the need to name any car of mine.
