19 March: A List Poem for a Sequoia

AI art: a sequoia forest

A List Poem for a Sequoia

Bark in vertical plates
of old weathered skin.

Ravines. Deep as sky.
Lungs of cilia breath.

Clinging heart of
ancient fantasy.

Of petrichor scent,
airborne as distant
and unknown lovers.

Of esters and alcohols.
Of vanilla and pineapple.
Cognac.

A woodpecker’s sharp beak.
Resin flows.

  1. I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a sequoia, Marilyn, unless they have them at Kew Gardens. I love list poems and I love how you brought me the sequoia in all its weathered glory. I also love the phrase ‘Clinging heart of ancient fantasy’. You pressed all the sense buttons with this one.

    1. Thank you, Kim. They’re thriving at Wakehurst. Perhaps you can take the grandchildren when you’re in this area next time!

  2. Your paean to the redwood also has a concrete poem sense–tall and thin and ending in sound rather than sight. Nice.
