13 March: A Long Ache

AI art: wooden row boat, fishing nets, Chinese fisherman standing on dock, clear water

You threw the red rubber ring from your hand, and said “On five,” and you counted 1, 2, 3 and then dived in the water to retrieve it … I was still waiting for 4 and 5.

You said you won; “Male ingenuity,” so I grabbed the ring and said “On three,” threw it and counted 1, 2, and on 3 I pushed you sideways off the dock into the water as I dived into the depths and retrieved the ring – “Women count,” I laughed.

Your wife and my husband sat at a table under a large canvas umbrella, drinking cold beer, eating salt & pepper squid, and trying to keep dry from a squally storm racing through.

They told me Monday morning that you died of a heart attack. It’s my own heart aching now.

I ache for my old friend and that remote island with its near-collapsing dock … and swimming in a rainstorm.

    1. Perhaps I should expand my Italian beyond pasta shapes. 🥰 Thank you, Nancy.

      1. Just go with ‘big noodles’, ‘small noodles’, ‘long noodles’, ‘noodles with a hole’, and ‘squiggly noodles’.

        1. Noodles? Sei pazzo?!

          Clearly you’re not Italian, Fishman!

        2. Yes, I appreciate this sort of approach. It’s like when I go to the fishmonger, (although some call this distinguished profession “fishanger”) and I say something like, “one fish, please, – and kindly keep the bones.” … and there’s no question about what I want.

          1. As you know, I’m married to an angler;
            the fish are brought home boned and cleaned!

            There’s no question about what I want.

  5. I hate good stories like this… we get caught up in the first words and enjoy spending time with the characters. And despite what we may begin to suspect, cannot leave until we read two of the most powerful words in fiction, ‘The End’

    (actually I liked your Six… but damn.)
