Counting For Something

There’s a lunar halo around the full moon.

And a Chihuahua barks at me
from the other side of my neighbour’s door.
It’s a voice of acid rain,

and I’m holding a bag of French goodies –
Dijon mustards and pink macarons.
I’ll dig up something for the dog.

It’s the last night of September,
and the air is warm enough
to coax gardenias to bloom,

and it occurs to me that
I’ve never seen an owl in the wild,
but I’ve seen sushi on a conveyor belt.

That must count for something.

  2. I step in… a descriptive scent, familiar by now, envelops me.
    And then…”and it occurs… something”.
I get that numb feeling on my arm, the one when I am encountered with some genuinely brilliant poetic ink!
The mystery and the beauty of the effect a string of simple words can have, in the hands of a master wordsmith.
May this Sun☀️day be yours, M.

    1. That first line perfectly describes synesthesia. Do we share this in common I wonder?

I am touched so very deeply by your words and sentiment. Thank you, Nick.

  3. I have two roses, one at the front and one at the back, and both,,, it might as well be July for them!
And it is years since I had macaroons. The thing that always struck me most about them was the shop displays.

    1. If you deadhead the blossoms on your roses, they’ll continue to bloom until the first frost. I’ve had roses for Christmas some years. And yes, macarons do make for a beautifully colourful window display. I’d much rather eat one than look at it though. A very good morning to you, B.

      1. Good morning, Misk. Nah, too sweet for me. We did get some real nougat one year, though. Seem to recall we froze it and just got it out an hour before dessert.

      2. And I just read that although cooler because of the time of year, September broke records in Europe.

        1. There are parts of France that are still in the mid-30s. It’s terribly hot.

  5. I’ve seen a wild owl in real life, but not sushi on a conveyor belt. 🦉 There’s a nice balance there.
    Really like your owl, Misky.

  6. No sushi on a conveyor belt for me, please. I had a terrace in my old apartment where I sat at night and watched a wild owl watching me … or was he watching Midnight, my cat. safe behind the window? 🙂 Wonderful whimsical poem.
