20 September: The Goatherd #9

And It Comes

the day opened like a flower,
the air warped
and hot
and unfinished.

the woman remembered it
as two hemispheres –
the beating heart of day,
and a wild fermenting moon.

and she went blinded into its creation,
a brailled path,
feeling her way,
close as foggy sleep.

and when that rooted knob
released her spine,
she cupped a child in her hands,

and they were alone,
except for a scattering of stars
and the silken bleat of goats.

      1. Well I’m certainly not going to start quoting favourite lines lol
Seriously, I really liked the poem but I wasn’t in the right space to put a thoughtful reply together.
Now my working week is over I can catch up. I very much want to read all your Goatherd poems in one place in one go – I might have to copy the text into one document to see it that way. You will soon have enough for a Chapbook…

        1. HA! Knew it. How many, minimally, do I need for a chapbook?

          1. I’ve put one together recently and the research I did it seems between 48 to 58 pages is the norm for a chapbook. I entered it to a competition but don’t think it will find a place there and the next step is finding a publisher or else to put it together myself at home and sell it out of hand. Or through Amazon or something.

            1. That’s more than I anticipated. 😳

              1. The pages get used up very quickly, so go for it. You certainly have enough work to fill it up in no time at all.

              2. You’d want to consider images/illustrations too.

          2. Actually, I don’t think that the chapbook has to be exclusively the Goatherd poems even if they dominate and even give the name to the collection – in which case I’m sure you could go now – but maybe you haven’t finished with the goatherd series…
