25 August: The Goatherd 5

AI artwork: man and woman in traditional African clothing with their goats.

5. When He Sees Her

Her donkey shifts its weight, and stares.
A man. Lean and tall. Long limbs. A face
with lines as deep as a flash flood’s gulley.
The man studies the woman milking his goat.

She’s lean and tall. Long limbs. A face that
he can’t read. She rises from her haunches,
and licks the last trace of milk from her hand.
She doesn’t speak, expects him to speak first.

The black goat nuzzles her hand, and bleats out
noisy conversation on behalf of them both.
She strokes its rough black coat, and whispers
in its ear, Is he a kind man to you, or not?

He centres her stillness within him, wonders,
Would this woman crowd my mind too much.

    2. I just realised that this song felt like being rocked to sleep in my dad’s old wooden row boat. Strange, I’ve not thought of that boat in many years.

      1. Coincidence, eh? And Nancy would say, Ain’t nothing like that!
And I agree… it is all part of the weaving… and when we are using our full attention, this is what happens, dear M.
        I call these moments Portals.
Thank you for brightening and comforting my day.🤗

        1. Don’t hold much stock in coincidence, but I do believe all paths lead to the same destination, it’s just that some paths are rockier than others. Portals. Yes.
