16 August: dVerse Prosery

AI artwork: drawing of girl looking at night sky, stars and full moon, colourful houses in the background.

Vanished

She’s learning about sound barriers at school. Sound. Speed. Aeroplanes. Red lights on the left. Green lights on the right. Like Christmas lanterns flashing on steel wings.

“Flash. Flash. Flash,” she calls out to the hundreds of faces up there. People flying through rain coloured clouds, over roads and Tobermory-colour houses.

She watches the sky – aeroplanes sliding between stars, in holding patterns, all that traffic holding its breath – sky, a tense diaphragm, flights waiting to land …

and then every red and green light blinks once and disappears … and then one by one so does every star, leaving the night sky a vast hollowed out darkness.

“Hello? Where did you go,” she calls out, where’d you go?”

  1. I’m enjoying your AI art, Marilyn, and I love the naïve style of this illustration – and the piece. I also love the simile of the ‘Christmas lanterns flashing on steel wings, the ‘Tobermory-colour houses’, and the thought of the sky holding flights waiting to land. The ending was unexpected and left me wondering.

    1. Thanks, Kim, and many thanks for prompt on Monday. After you left your lovely comment, I trimmed this one a bit – it waffled on a bit.

    1. There was a whole kiddie TV show based on that town. Pretty little place in Scotland.
