26 July: dVerse Ekphrastic Poetry

AI art: monotone hand-drawing of a woman's face expressing anxiety

The Woman Who Lies with Rocks

This woman is terrified of her own sanity.
Some days, she thinks she looks like
Churchill’s bulldog, so she dresses in pink

because dogs don’t wear pink by choice,
and passerbys will smile and think,
There goes that lovely woman in pink.

But her sanity is a hatchery of anxiety.

Sanity makes her over-think,
makes her tongue thick and dry,
and it ignites storms in her brain.

It burns the way Earth sparks and smoulders.

She remembers her mother’s voice,
calming one moment and cackling
lunacy the next, and she remembers

lullabies and her mother rocking her to sleep.

So she waits for the lullabies to come.
Lies on the ground and sleeps with rocks,
thinking they’re meant to rock her to sleep.

  1. Sentences seemingly light… but charged as a cloud before a storm.

  3. Such a sharp character you have drawn with undercurrents of a lunacy and lullabies. This part sparks the turmoil: it ignites storms in her brain. Love the interpretation of the artwork.

  4. A unique take, Misky…you looked behind the artwork into the emotions!

  5. I particularly liked
“But her sanity is a hatchery of anxiety.

    Sanity makes her over-think,
makes her tongue thick and dry,
and it ignites storms in her brain.”
For most assume sanity is always a boon…

  6. The image took you to a shadowy place, Marilyn, and a woman ‘terrified of her own sanity’ who thinks she looks like ‘Churchill’s bulldog. That’s a great phrase, ‘her sanity is a hatchery of anxiety’ and I like the way you describe her brain burning ‘the way Earth sparks and smoulders’. I also like the play on the word rock in the final lines.

    1. I’ve had a couple of difficult weeks, and the painting just took me right down that path. Thanks so much for reading it, Kim. I appreciate it.

  7. Reblogged this on Reena Saxena and commented:

This poem by Misky struck a very deep chord with me – a woman afraid of her own sanity, while living with the other side of sanity.

  8. That poor woman! You took us deep inside her with her anxiety and memories.

I like the way you used rock at the end.

  9. Great job! I love this, especially the opening stanza. I, too, chose the woman in pink.
