Over the Alps
12 July: Across the Alps Chamonix & Mont Blanc
Châtillon churches,
tall steeples
and pointy roofs,
grey stone
the colour of mid-February,
and you hum Ave Maria
without realising.

Now I have “How do we solve a problem like Maria?” as an earworm – a conflation of mentioning Ave Maria and the Alps. Joking aside I enjoyed this poem. When we flew out to Crete in 2020, we flew right over the Alps in clear weather and from 35,000 feet, you cannot pick out any signs of human activity – it is just a wilderness of so many mountains it boggles the imagination – have they all been climbed or even named – I suppose they have yet it seems impossible…
Good morning to you Misky – it feels good to know you are safely returned to Sussex and working away as usual…

The lettuces have been bumper but the onions had all gone to seed – the rain too late to save them…

My romain and endive are happy that I’ve not been around to pinch bits out of them for salad. Tons of cucumbers, but the tomatoes are still very small and green (weather’s to blame, I think). I might have to buy tomatoes for a while more. Parsley, chives and basil all growing happily. Just gave the grapevines a good chop back as too many shoots and tendrils.
It’s funny I never really got on with that part of France. The scenery was beautiful but I suppose it was the food. Very preserved. Which, I suppose, it would be.

Beautiful verse and view. Funny, I got writer’s block on my last novel concerning a stalled train traveling through the Alps: a mix of Agatha Christie and Dean Koonz. 🙂 Thanks for visiting again. Here’s the next phase of Blaine’s journey to go with yours: https://rolandyeomans.blogspot.com/2023/07/future-shock.html
