2 June: Box Tree Caterpillar

The Box Tree Caterpillars

Sometime during nighttime’s
doorful of sky, they made mischief.

Moths laying eggs. Spinning
white web shrouds.

They’re all over the place, he says.

Last week the eggs started hatching.

Caterpillars, eating my box trees.
Stringy threads
of stripped sticks and stems.

Oops. Overdosing on S alliteration there.

Those moths partitioned my world.
Me vs caterpillars.

I’m like metabolic spit.
A vengeful moon at your chrysalis.

My box plants are beyond saving.

Not like when I’d sink my toy boat
in the bathtub, and it’d pop back up
so I could save the crew.

Here’s another one over here, I say,
and he hands me the can Bug Off.

  1. I like how you break the Fourth Wall here, commenting on alliteration and talking to, presumably, Mr Misky…

    1. Thanks, Andrew. Yes, I was speaking to Mr Misky. He’s as distressed as I am to see what these beasties are doing. We nursed the box plants a few years ago through box blight, and now this.

  2. I love the term “making mischief”.
Can’t help being reminded of the summer giant caterpillars devastated my tomato plants.
That ruined my crop and my desire to try again. Damn nasty buggers! 🐛

    1. There’s something about caterpillars that just gives me the shivers. I’m not a girlie-squealing-type when I see a spider or some other wormy beastie, but I CANNOT touch a caterpillar with my bare hands. I need thick gloves so I can’t feel them wriggling about. I truly hate them!

      1. I don’t get bugged out easily but these critters were awful. They were huge yet difficult to see because they were green and clung to the underside of the leaves. I had to pull them off my plants like leeches but there were just too many there was no way I could keep up. I haven’t grown a tomato for years now and it’s a shame because it’s my favorite garden edible. 🍅

        1. You should try again, Nancy. Nothing better than a homegrown tomato.

          1. You’re so right, Misky! Store bought tomatoes are anemic. My upper back and neck have been screaming at me lately. If I do try again, maybe I’ll go with long rectangular planters on the patio instead of digging up my yard.
