21 March: for Fandango’s One Word Challenge – Flash Fiction

AI artwork, graffiti on overpass

THOSE KIDS

And I say, The same kids who spray painted the pedestrian overpass are probably the same ones who poured Fairy liquid detergent into the fish pond, killed all the fish. A right luminescent stink on the hottest August day on record according to that weatherman on telly who looks like a skinny elf. I’m talking to my neighbour over the fence, the way old women do in a Norman Rockwell painting. And I say, Those same kids probably stole money out of their mum’s coin purse, and my neighbour says that the cashier at the Co-op says a group of kids are pocketing sweets without paying, and I reply by saying that those same kids would never steal sauerkraut because kids nowadays don’t even know what sauerkraut is. I grew up on sauerkraut, says my neighbour, and I tell her be sure to keep your receipt at the Co-op or they might accuse you of stealing, like they do with those kids who probably spray painted the pedestrian overpass.

  2. Love the line about the luminescent stink. And I like the voice you hsve adopted. The thing I find interesting about this kind of first person narrative is how it’s so obviously opinion and conjecture. It leaves you pondering the veracity of the speaker as well as enjoying her tale at face value. A strange double mind set.

    1. I stepped into my neighbour’s voice. The conversation never happened, but the attitude is all her. She’s an absolutely riot, and I never take anything she says at face value.
